The State of Texas ushered in a few new laws of note as the calendar changed from 2022 to 2023, including one that brings more transparency to the judicial system, one that addresses threats to the ozone layer and another that impacts local school district tax revenues.
Hughes Springs and the surrounding area are still in the process of cleaning up after several tornadoes ripped through the area Nov. 4. The United States Small Business Administration has distributed over $1 million in federal disaster loans for Texas businesses and residents impacted by severe storms and tornadoes in Lamar and Morris counties, but more held is available for residents of Hughes Springs who were affected by the storms.
A Hughes Springs resident has been sentenced in Cass County court, according to Criminal District Attorney Courtney Shelton. Shelton released information for cases disposed of in the County Court by Judge Donald Dowd in December of 2022.
