A community mental health first aid class was held in Naples Jan. 11, sponsored by the Morris County Collaborative. Just as knowing CPR or bandaging procedures is important to first aid for your physical first aid, it is just as important to be able to administer first aid for those who may be in mental crisis. The class was lead by Vicky Coffee of the Hogg Foundation for Mental Health and Natasha Stewart, M.A., LPC, Director of the Center for Counseling and Behavioral Health. The eight hour class was held at the First United Methodist Church in Naples. Those who completed this class will receive their Mental Health First Aid certificate. The Mental Health First Aid Training and Research Program was first developed in 2001 by Betty Kitchener and Anthony Jorm in Australia. With today’s society and ever growing daily stressors, mental health and wellness is becoming more of a reality. It is no longer just being pushed under the rug. Yet, there is still a stigma that surrounds mental illness and wellness.
