Resolve to make a big splash

Resolve to make a big splash

The start of a new year has so many connotations, hopes and promises.People make resolutions to be better, do better and live better. But one thing I have learned in my six decades of living, a new year is really just another day. The first week of January is just the week after the last week of December, and the week before the second week of January. Or, in simpler terms, just another day.

What do birds eat in the winter? Many of us keep bird feeders going all year long, so the obvious answer is bird seed. Well, this is great advice for those few bird groups that happen to be granivores, which include finches and doves. Several other species flock to bird feeders, but most song birds are insectivores, particularly during the time after egg hatching. At that point seeds and berries only provide a supplement, and their young cannot digest seeds at all. Most bird species cannot reproduce without a good supply of insects.
