Governor Greg Abbott today announced the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) received federal approval to allow Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) recipients to use their food benefits to purchase hot foods and ready-to-eat meals due to impacts from the severe winter storm.

Governor Greg Abbott recently announced that the Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs (TDHCA) has launched the Texas Rent Relief Program, the first statewide rent and utility assistance program for qualifying households throughout Texas. This program has been created to administer the more than $1 billion allocated to Texas through the latest federal COVID-19 stimulus bill. TDHCA began accepting applications for the program on Feb. 15, and Texans can visit TexasRentRelief.com to learn more about qualifications, required documents, and the application process.

According to the National weather Service in Shreveport, La., last week’s historic winter storm dropped between two and 20 inches of snow throughout their reporting area, which covers Northeast Texas, Southeastern Arkansas, and Northeastern Louisiana. This includes an approximate accumulation of 10-14 inches in the Steel Country area.
