It could be my imagination, or maybe my frame of mind, but it seems like there has been so much grief in the little orb that I call my world this week. So many people are hurting from loss, dealing with sickness, and battling the seemingly endless plague of Covid. It has gotten to the point that I don’t even want to look at social media, because it is almost inevitable that there will be another obituary, another friend hurting, or a plea for prayer.

More than 600 new laws in effect

More than 600 new laws signed into law by Governor Greg Abbott went into effect Sept. 1. The new state laws — including one of the most restrictive abortion laws in the country, the right to carry handguns both concealed and openly without a license, changes to election law and a bill allowing restaurants to sell alcohol to go — were passed during the regular session of the legislature, which ended May 31. The House and Senate adjourned their second special session Thursday night.

It is a little funny sometimes what influences me to write this piece here in this space, but for the last two weeks I was influenced by the headline on the Edward Jones column that was underneath in our sister paper over in Bowie County. This week’s EJ column was about helping our grandkids financially, and it piqued my interest.
