Naples hosts 83rd Annual Watermelon Festival and Rodeo
Just as it has for the last 83 years, the annual Naples Watermelon Festival and Rodeo saw a huge turnout July 22-24. The festival was once again highlighted by the Naples Rodeo each evening.
Health fair offers variety of resources, information for residents
In an area where health issues are a major concern, the Daingerfield Area Health Fair, held July 24 at Church on the Rock, went a long way towards connecting the community with a variety of agencies. Sponsored by Ounce of Prevention, Special Health Resources, Church on the Rock, the Daingerfield Chamber of Commerce and the Morris County Collaborative, the fair was deemed a success by Chairwoman Martha Baker. According to Baker, there were 123 registrants who were able to visit with 37 agencies offering a variety of services from transportation and meal assistance to multiple healthcare providers and other agencies.
Texas Conservation Alliance continues fight against Marvin Nichols
Marvin Nichols Reservoir is officially a part of the 2022 Texas State Water Plan, but the fight to stop the construction of the proposed reservoir is far from over. Those who have organized to oppose the construction of the mammoth 66,000-acre lake note that there is still plenty of time for them to be successful in their quest to keep it out of the Sulphur River Basin. Work is already underway in an effort to have the project removed from the 2027 State Water Plan.
Hunger Free America CEO visits Daingerfield food pantry
Hunger is a real issue, especially in rural areas. In an effort to bring light to the issue of hunger in rural areas, Hunger First America CEO Joel Berg stopped at several sites in Northeast Texas as part of his nationwide tour visiting with those working on the front lines of hunger, and to advocate for longterm, public policy solutions to food insecurity. Berg made stops in Daingerfield, as well as Northeast Texas Community College (NTCC) and Mount Pleasant on July 21.
