Texas prioritizes recipients of COVID vaccine Phase 1B

According to The Texas Department of State Health Services, Texas has decided to prioritize people who are at the greatest risk of death from COVID-19 for the next phase of vaccination. People 65 and older have averaged more than 70 percent of the COVID-19 deaths in Texas, as well as those with medical conditions having an increased risk of hospitalization and death.

While many were still recovering from ringing in the New Year, a small crowd gathered at the Morris County Courthouse Jan. 1 as several elected officials took the oaths of their respective offices. With area COVID-19 numbers on the rise, the swearing-in ceremonies that normally fill the courtroom and feature each newly elected and re-elected official was broke into two parts, with some being held earlier in the week.

As COVID-19 cases continue to climb throughout the state and nation, area county judges were informed over the weekend that Trauma Service Area F (TSA-F) has exceeded the 15 percent COVID case count for at least seven consecutive days. As a result, the area has fallen under Governor’s Order GA-32, which was originally issued Oct. 7, 2020. TSA-F includes Morris, Titus, Bowie, Cass, Delta, Hopkins, Lamar, and Red River counties.

It has been a year now (already?) since I came to NE Texas to publish three outstanding community newspapers (Mount Pleasant Tribune, Pittsburg Gazette, and The Steel Country Bee). I had some big plans, just as many of you did, for 2020. Part of those plans were to meet and get to know as many of you as possible that make up these great communities and to do my very best to provide good and relevant content to our readers as well as build that bridge between our consumers and local business owners; who without each other simply could not flourish. The lifeblood of our communities is always the people. Unfortunately, we were met with an unprecedented challenge we all know now as COVID-19. Something that literally changed life as we know it for everyone.
