Even without two starters in the lineup, the Pewitt Brahmas knew they needed a strong performance to defeat a DeKalb squad looking to take the next step in the district race. DeKalb came in with confidence, having won over state-ranked Pilot Point earlier this year and having played within five points of one of the defending district champions in Daingerfield. Behind a consistent rushing attack, the Bears had a strong inkling that this would finally be the year they knocked off the Bulls for the first time since 2012.
The Daingerfield Tigers moved to 2-0 in District 10- 3A play after dismantling the Prairiland Patriots Oct. 8. The win moved the Tigers into a first-place tie with Morris County neighbor Pewitt, while Prairiland fell into a tie at the bottom of the district.
Going into Friday’s game, both the Pewitt Brahmas and Chisum Mustangs were looking to make a statement in District 10-3A Division II. One team had gotten off to a hot start, winning its first five games, outscoring its first five opponents 268-90 and rolling to victory in its first two district games. The combined record of that team’s opponents going into Friday night was 13-16.
The Hughes Springs Mustangs lost their first district matchup Oct. 8 as they fell to perennial powerhouse Waskom. After putting up 50-plus points each against New Diana and Ore City, the Mustangs fell to 2-4 overall (2-1 in district play) after the 42-0 shutout against the Wildcats.
