The Hughes Springs Mustangs faced an uphill battle as they prepared for their first round series. As the fourth seed out of District 15-3A, the Mustangs first opponent was District 16-3A champion Elysian Fields.

The Daingerfield Tigers and the Hughes Springs Mustangs met in Daingerfield April 27 in a game with major playoff implications. The winner would take the fourth spot in the district and head into the playoffs, while the loser would be done. After the dust cleared, the Mustangs had the victory, 11-6 and were headed to the playoffs.
